You sure can use other sized magazines with this rifle. I have the same rifle and I purchased two 30 rd mags for mine. Just be aware that standard AR15 .223-type mags will not fit this rifle. There is a slight difference between them as the Ruger has a different type of magazine catch/release. My mags are Ruger brand made specifically for this rifle and work flawlessly.
