William, this will depend on it's designated use. The .357 is a very versatile all around cartridge for everything from self defense to hunting. Since there are not very many semi-auto's chambered in .357 Magnum, my opinion is yes. Recent reviews have been very good and there is nowhere you would not be able to find a variety of ammunition at a moments notice. It's really a one off type of pistol and 357Sig will give you higher capacity but the DE 357 Magnum will give higher power.
In .357 Mag auto there is not much choice the desert eagle and the 1911 Coonan are the only 2 I know so if you want a 1911 go with the Coonan if you want a different style auto the desert eagle is worth the money
For reliability and choice of firearms I'd consider the 357 SIG cartridge. It is chambered in most pistols chambered for 40 S&W and has no feeding issues like the rimmed 357 Magnum cartridge and magazines are easy to find.
