The 357 magnum will fire without the clips but shorter rounds like the 38 colt and 38 special probably need the clips to work. You'll need to take a pencil with you to knock out the brass as the extractor won't hook them because it's relieved to use with the moon clips.

On performance center pistol the cartridge is still held by the "Rim" on the case so you can load individually or use moon clips(poor mans speed loader). Best of both worlds.
