First off "stainless" is not a finish .. it's material. Stainless guns are made from stainless steel. As opposed to blued or plated guns that are made from carbon steel or aluminum alloy. All S&W guns with a "6" in the model number are either stainless or partially stainless. An example of the later would be the 642 J-frame Airweight, it has an aluminum alloy frame with a stainless steel barrel and stainless cylinder. Stainless can be "finished" in different ways such as "brushed stainless" giving it a softer, grainier look or can highly polished to a mirror like "finish" like that of nickle or chrome. Something in between would the muted softer look called "satin finish". The main point again is that "stainless" is a steel not an applied finish and can changed to your taste. I have a 642 with a brushed cylinder and polished cylinder flutes that looks cool, like that done by S&Ws Performance Center and I did the polishing myself.
