The S&W 686 is a fine firearm and for a revolver gives you that extra shot. If you are more comfortable with a revolver over semi-autos I think this would be a great choice.
It makes a good carry weapon with the right Holster and a GOOD belt the weight means that you need a GOOD belt holster combo
I would alternate carrying both a revolver and a smaller, lighter, higher capacity compact or sub compact semi-auto pistol. At some point you will become as comfortable with carrying a semi-auto. Once this happens, carry what you feel like for the day. You will find in due time that a smaller, lighter, higher capacity pistol (which can weigh less than half the weight of the 686) to be very alluring. Revolvers have their place and I also carry one from time to time.
