Hi Herbert, i use a 3-9x40 to repeatedly shoot a 18" gong at 600. i had no visibility issues at all. This would be great on a CIA 308 semi auto.

the Nikon will be great at 400-500 yards longer I want a higher power scope it will work fine on the CIA .308

The 3 is the lowest power it can be adjusted to and the 9 represents the highest power. The 40 is the 40mm objective lens which the larger it is the more light gets into the scope and can be used in darker conditions better. This scope is not adjustable for parallax and it is set at 200 yards internally so the best sight picture you'l get is at 200. Closer and further it will not be as good and will be noticeable at very close or very long range. This scope should work best between 100 and 400 yards.

This would work but, you can go further with .308. Getting a larger scope at least a 4x12 will allow you to reach out a little further with better sight. Hope that helps!
