John the barrel is stamped Caliber: .223 Remington so I would not fire 5.56Nato ammunition for safety and warranty purposes.

Its listed as a .223 so I would restrict my ammo to .223. You can contact Savage and ask US: (413) 568-7001 or (800) 370-0708
