the gun is listed as a .223/5.56 so you can use either round I cant find anywhere that says that the stock has a storage compartment I suggest that you contact colt to be sure Colt's Manufacturing Company LLC P.O. Yes Matt. The barrel is stamped 5.56NATO so it will safely fire both 5.56 and 223 ammunition. The butts tock does have the original storage compartment.
