Hi Bridget, the Ruger Blackhawk is a "Large Frame" revolver and is definitely rated for +P Heavy ammunition by Ruger.
The Blackhawk is the large frame and it will handle +p ammo with no issues in-fact many reloading manuals have a "Ruger only" 45LC section of loads that are to "hot" for other 45lc revolvers. I think Buffalo bore has some Ruger only loads also. It is one of the strongest 45lc single action guns on the market. Mine has the 5.5 inch barrel and I carry it in the woods for close encounters with bears and others

If youre nit sure contact Ruger customer service. If the owner's manuel doesnt specify it then I wouldn't recommend it.
