I'm a rifle guy with limited knowledge of handguns. How do you safely carry a firearm like this with no safety with a round in the chamber for quick defensive use? Do you have to chamber a round beforehand? If so that would not be very practical in my opinion. Comments appreciated.

Robert, "Always, always, always" carry with a round in the chamber.  These small carry pistols will have a heavier trigger pull than models with a manual safety for added safety. Just make sure to find a suitable holster with a sufficient trigger guard cover and you will be fine.
