Allan, I would always follow the manufacturers recommendation for safety and warranty reasons. A 3" shell would literally be flush with the end of the barrel and the crimp would extend past the barrel after firing and the shot/slug would not ever contact the barrel. Possible? Maybe. Recommended? No.
