Adrian the 1/7 Twist will stabilize the widest range of 5.56/223 bullet weights so no worries there. Virtually any brass cased 66gr FMJ will work for target practice. For self defense I recommend : https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/656_2081_10000601/products_id/714014129/SSA%20556NATO%2063GR%20SP%2020/400/

Adrian, it will stabilize any bullet weight, but, the 1/7 twist is usually the most accurate with the heavier weights, 62 grains and up. As far as the best brands, any quality brand should work fine, but there are many uses. If you want the best self defense round, check out the Speer Gold Dots. You can watch ballistic testing of these rounds on YouTube. I hope this helps.
