Kevin, Remington says this Remington 700 Action Long Action Magnum is Compatible with 7mm Rem Mag, .300 Win Mag, .300 RUM, .375 H&H, and .458 Win Mag. I would confirm whether or not the 338 Lapua is with Remington at 1-800-243-9700.

It has the potential... a gunsmith worth his salt can do the machining required.

It will not work. The case head dimensions are different by .050" which would entail modifying the bolt head and extractor. Call your gunsmith before you proceed. You may want to look for a Savage action for the 338 Lapua.
