Terry, the Thunder Ranch is a very good home defense shotgun. I however went with the 590 due to the 8 + 1 Shell capacity. Either will be extremely effective as a home defense shotgun.

the 2 best home defense guns are the Mossberg pumps (500 and 590 ) and the Remington 870 pumps either will be superb for the job
