Ben given the cartridge ballistics and your 1 foot diameter measure, 375 to 425 yards or so max will be possible with quality ammunition. Longer than this, this round drops like a rock.

Get a good prism type optic like the Burris AR 332 with the Ballistic CQ reticle and you should be good to 600 yards. This is what I shoot 3-gun with but on an AR platform. Same ballistics. the .223 or 5.56 launches the 55 grain FMJ at 3150 fps. The guys who flunked Physics think the 5.56 is a superior round. If you are good enough around 500 yards is possible if you shoot rifles like me 200 is max (I am no good with a rifle )
