The rear sight screws into the top of the frame, so I wondered if I could mount any kind of aftermarket iron sights or optics in the same holes.

Hi Louis, Yes you can as long as the holes match up

Yes you can Louis. You just need to measure your holes from center to center so you can properly match the replacement Aftermarket Sight.
