This may be stupid but I live in a free state and can have full size mags. I'm skiing because this version, the unfree state version, is available for the 180 day layaway but not the free state version. Can I buy this and use free state sized mags in it or do they alter it somehow do the regular mags don't work?

Yes you can Jon. The standard capacity mags are physically the same size as the 10rd mags. The 10rd mags are just internally blocked to only hold 10rds for sale to restricted states.
