Mark, You do not mention what firearm you are asking about. Most shotgun are great for pheasants with #6 birdshot and can take down a deer with 1oz 2 3/4 inch slugs. Practice and get familiar with firearm and you will be okay. A Remington 870 pump is great entry shotgun you can use for anything and last you and your child's lifetime
