No it does not need rifling however it will be more accurate with a Rifled barrel but at self defense distances it will be fine

Kris, it does not. This ammunition will be accurate enough for reliable hits up to 50ft in a handgun and 50yrds in a long gun with out rifling. Rifling of course will increase the accuracy range.
