while it should hold up on a 45-70 it is not a scope that is well matched to it the 45-70 is a short to medium range rifle and this is a long range scope you would be much better served by a 2X7 power scop

Warren, yes, this scope has been tested up to .338 Lapua Magnum and will live just fine on a 45-70 Gov'T Rifle.
