Scott, under 500 yards, there are many readily available and easy to find ammunition/cartridges. I would choose one that is readily available with many grain weights for versatility. The 300 Winchester Magnum has been doing this very job for decades with nary a problem.

I would go with a .300 Winchester mag or one of the 7mm rounds and don't discount to old 30-06 as it will also get the job done
