Fortunately, Gary, the present day S&W revolvers take advantage of the more recent (and stronger) steel to manufacture their pistols. The old days of cracks in the forcing cones are basically gone, and just history. The modern revolvers experience very few problems associated with material failure. I don;t think you have anything to be concerned about with the M686.
