Disclaimer: I am not an Illinois resident so the only information I can provide is posted information about their regulations AND I am not a legal authority so if you have any doubts about the legality of a purchase I would highly recommend that you contact the proper authority in Ilinois to be sure. That being said, at the federal level, the ATF refers to this gun as a "firearm" not an AOW or SBS (by the way, barrel length for SBS is 18" and under, the 16.5" number is for short barreled rifles) and it is not subject to NFA regulation making it legal to purchase in many states; however, some states place additional restrictions on guns like this. Personally, I have seen forum posts of Illinois residents having no problems purchasing this gun and the similar Mossberg Shockwave. I would still suggest that you contact a proper law enforcement authority on this matter to be sure and not risk potential legal trouble.
