Jim - yes sir, you certainly can do so. However you can also fire those 2 3/4 shells in your magnum barrel. Won't hurt a thing. Its only when the shell is longer than the chamber (i.e. a 3 1/2" shell in a 2 3/4" chamber) that one could run into problems.
