Nick, just contact your local FFL and arrange for them to hold the firearm for you until your return. I do it all the time without issue.

Sir, that is between you and the FFL. By all means, let him/her know up front, though, so they don't ship back your firearm. The solution to your situation will be between you two.

Just notify your FFL dealer that you'll be out of town, they should hold it until you return.
