You must be 21 or older to purchase a handgun in the following states: California, Connecticut, Delaware, DC, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, Washington, Wyoming. Under federal law, the minimum age to buy a handgun from a licensed dealer is 21. But the age limit drops to 18 if the gun is being purchased from a private, unlicensed seller.
