This rifle is fully rated to fire either .223 or 5.56 ammunition. It is actually chambered in 5.56 and therefore safe to fire .223. This makes a very versatile gun, versus one chambered in just .223 that isn't really meant to fire 5.56. You can buy and shoot whichever is most economical for you. Enjoy your M&P 15.
