I have a desire to buy a SW500 Magnum. However, I sometimes think about the Ruger Alaskan 454 Casull. My wife and I like hiking in bear country and want a back up plan in case the spray doesn't work. I read the Ruger has issues with bullets that are not properly crimped. Finally, which will have better value to my collection? Thank you.

I am a ruger fan Ruger revolvers are some of the strongest actions made That would push me toward the 454 Ruger. but if you really want a 500 SW you will not be happy until you buy it so in your case get the gun you want!!! the S&W

Vincent, the 500S&W Magnum without a doubt. Although the 454 Casull would be sufficient, you can never be over gunned in bear country. The 500 for yourself and a minimum of a 357 for her is better than just you with either the 500 or 454. God forbid if something happens to you, she would not be helpless.

Vincent - IF you're looking for someone to validate your desire for a S&W 500, you might be disappointed with me.  The Ruger 454 Alaskan is all the gun anyone would ever need for bear defense. If that's our true objective, the you need look no further.  The S&W 500 is, in my opinion, more of a 'novelty gun' that interests very few other than those with the need for a 'flashy range toy'.  the Ruger Alaskan, on the other hand is clearly a firearm designed for and capable of taking care of business when a 'big gun' is needed.    But, like Randy said - if you're set on the 500 then might as well go ahead and get one - you would never be happy with anything else.
