Daniel, yes you can for "Modified" or lessor choked shotguns. It is a general rule of thumb to avoid shooting slugs through "Full" Choked shotguns.

Daniel, Any modern shotgun like the Mossberg 500 will handle slugs.

Daniel - avoid shooting a slug in a full or extra full choke shotgun, period. It is a safety hazard. Modified chokes are "OK" .. Open/imp cyl chokes are great.

For the most part, yes. Rifled slugs are meant to be stablized out of any smoothbore shotguns. They should function just fine as long as you don't have a full choke on your shotgun.
