Timothy, all metal Sights need not be expensive to be quality. All my AR rifles and pistols sport these Iron Sights I found on Ebay for a great price. Timothy - take it from another "old soldier" .. through personal experience I can tell you to avoid the cheapo iron sights. They might work for some who know no better, but they just don't hold zero, and are very difficult to adjust as the mechanisms aren't precisely machined. Get yourself a good set of quality metal sights - they will cost you $100 or likely more. Then, consider a good basic red dot sight like a SIG Romeo 3 or Vortex Spitfire. I can tell you, they are a blessing for old fading eyes that just can't quite line up those irons any more like we did as kids on the M16s. For sights, I think a set of Troy Battle Sights would be best, around $200, but the Magpul MBUS PRO Front/Rear Sights MAG275/MAG276 would fill your needs - they're steel, flip down when not being used, and work when they're needed.
