Joshua, All AR's are gas operated. This firearm is direct gas impingement operated. No gas piston. Gas goes directly through gas tube to gas block on bolt (BCG) and operates the system.
Joshua, yes, this rifle has the standard "Direct Gas Impingement" Recoil System and not the "Gas Piston" Recoil System. Both are Gas systems but different type. Excellent demo video here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=feuWaWIAf5E
It is a direct impingement system not a gas piston system
Joshua - This particular Diamondback rifle functions with a "Direct Gas Impingement System", and the gas system is "Mid-Length", not Rifle length, meaning the gas port in the barrel is 9 inches away from the receiver of the rifle, versus 12 inches as it would be on the "rifle length system".
