Robert - Honestly, I find the S&W Shield to be hard-to-beat as a carry gun. Either in 9mm, 40 or 45 acp, they are small enough to carry all day without a problem, but big enough to shoot comfortably on the range. They aren't over-priced, and have been out long enough now they "should have all the bugs worked out". I've been carrying a firearm for 40+ years, and today, I carry a Shield in 45acp. Its what I would stake my life on. Robert, I suggest checking the area you live in and see if there is a range facility that rents firearms. If there is, then look at several pistols to get the feel of them and what best fits your hands and suits your needs. Then rent a few and put some rounds down range to really get a feel for them. If this is not an option, then go to the local gun store and look at what they have. Like I said before doing this will give you a better idea of what you might be looking for.
