I just purchased and plan on running a few different rounds through it but just so I'll have an idea, can anyone shed some light on which ones might work best (self-defense and range)?

Samantha - For general range use (punching paper) the blazer brass 115 gr or Winchester White Box 115 grains work just fine, and they're readily available, and fairly inexpensive.  For self defense, I have trusted my life to Federal Hydra Shok 124 gr HP.  https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/65885/fed+ammo+premium+9mm+124gr+hydra-shok+jhp+20-pack+p9hs1  You will find hundreds of "ultimate defense/ultimate whatever" rounds out there, most of which cost more than the Hydra Shok, and many of which are more hype than actual performance, but I've see firsthand what Hydra Shok can do .. and believe me, it works.
