Jason - 1: The rifle will not fire unless the lever is completely 'closed'; 2: The hammer acts as a safety, if desired. It can be lowered carefully to 'decock' the rifle. 3: (most important) the shooter's trigger finger - keep it off the trigger until ready to fire the weapon.

Jason, this rifle features the same sliding transfer bar "safety" system in it's hammer. (Transfer Bar Safety).
