Jason - 1: The shotgun will not fire unless the lever is completely 'closed'; 2: The hammer acts as a safety, if desired. It can be lowered carefully to 'decock' the shotgun 3: (most important) the shooter's trigger finger - keep it off the trigger until ready to fire the weapon.

Jason, this rifle features the same sliding transfer bar "safety" system in it's hammer. (Transfer Bar Safety). The rifle also has a Lever cocking mechanism where the rifle will not fire unless the Lever is fully closed after cocking.
