Do I need an automatic bolt carrier group. Even if I don't have to have one would it work better than a regular semi-auto one?

Gary, no Sir you do not. Franklin Armory revised the Gen 3 Trigger to work in all AR applications BCG's. It will work slightly better with a Full Auto BCG.

Gary - the Gen III model, (which this one is) is claimed by the company to be fully compatible with any BCG .  So, you should not have any problem with either an M-16 BCG or an AR-15 BCG.

No you do not it will work with both auto and semi auto BGCs
