what advantages can I expect with a 10.5" barrel over 7.5" barrel? how much extra velocity? Would there be more recoil as more powder has a chance to burn? I would imagine the 45/70 was designed for at least an 18 inch barrel.

Brad, you will get less muzzle flip due to the extra weight up front and 100 to 175fps extra velocity depending on the load you use. This would equate to higher muzzle and beyond energy as well.
