Is the Desert Eagle 50AE 6-in an adequate handgun for protection when hiking or exploring and living in Western bear country (not bear hunting), assuming 50AE hardcast? The big, high velocity revolvers (.460 XVR or .500 S&W) have more power but only 5 rounds vs. DE 50AE 7+1 SA semi (faster follow up shots)

Yes Sir it will suffice. HardCast bullets as you have stated will be the preferred loading. Just make sure you thoroughly test beforehand in all your magazines too proof the load you intend to use is reliable. Cheers!

Yes, that would be good. Personally I would use a 454 casull. But the number one rule is to make a lot of noise in the woods. People that try to stay quiet catch the bear of guard and it's only option is to attack.
