Mark, the barrel is actually "Stamped" 5.56NATO so you are good to go with 5.56 or 223 ammunition Sir.
Mark - the barrel is chambered in 5.56. .223 is identical in dimensions, but just not loaded as 'hot' as 5.56. Any gun chambered in 5.56, therefore, can safely shoot .223. Guns chambered in .223 should not be sued to fire 5.56 ammunition unless the manufacturer states it is OK. This gun, the M&P AR, is safe to shoot either 5.56 or .223 ammunition
