So on some of the other models it states .308(7.62×51) but this model states 7.62x51 I thought the rule was you can run 7.62 in a 308 but not the other way around so the answer I'm looking for is, is this .308 or is this 7.62x51

Thomas - Copied directly from the owner manual of the SIG 716 rifle:   "The rifle is chambered in 7.62x51mm naTo and is compatible with .308 Winchester ammunition"  (Page 21 - Owners manual) https://www.sigsauer.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/SIG716.pdf  So, YES the rifle is compatible with 308 Winchester Ammunition.

Some military chambers for 7.62x51 can run head space to 1.645 which will stretch a 308 win. case to the point that it may separate. Won't hurt you much, but not a good situation. Have the chamber checked and see if it is chambered short enough to run 308 safely. If so then you can shoot both. You can fire a 7.62 in it then black up the shoulder with a magic marker. Set your dial calipers to .400 and set them on the shoulder to leave a mark on both sides. Then measure the head 2 times to both marks and average your readings. If it measures 1.634-1.627 it is safe for 308.
