Some military chambers for 7.62x51 can run head space to 1.645 which will stretch a 308 win. case to the point that it may separate. Won't hurt you much, but not a good situation. Have the chamber checked and see if it is chambered short enough to run 308 safely. If so then you can shoot both. You can fire a 7.62 in it then black up the shoulder with a magic marker. Set your dial calipers to .400 and set them on the shoulder to leave a mark on both sides. Then measure the head 2 times to both marks and average your readings. If it measures 1.634-1.627 it is safe for 308.
Thomas, the SIG 716G@ has long been advertised with 308. For warranty and safety reasons confirm this directly with SIG at 603-610-3000 option 1 ---- 8:00am – 5:30pm EST.
