It is a decocking button, a bit out of place on a striker fired gun but some people like it. You can hit the button which decocks the striker and then the gun wont fire until you pull the slide partially back again to recock it. The TP9SF models don't have a decocker
Brycen, Trevor described the decocking button on the top of the slide well. If you have a round in the chamber and do not want a ND (negligent discharge) you can press button and decock striker. Just take short tug on slide to reactivate. On my TP9SA I never use it. Do not even notice it. Never accidentally depressed it. I have played around with it at the range to totally understand how it functions. Just another safety feature like a thumb safety. I never use it and don't even realize it is there.
