Mark - what model was that S&W to which you refer? This one, like all I've seen in my 66 years, is 'up for safe, down to fire'.

Mark, This thumb safety is swiped down to the firing position on this firearm. If you had a S&W semi-auto with manual safety that was up to fire and down to safe sounds like it was broken.
