Ah yes, indeed, I overlooked the fact this was a 9mm ... yes, they 'nest' inside each other on the recoil rod. Should be an illustration in the manual. Sorry for my confusion.

This is Colt's Advanced Dual Spring Recoil System they developed recently for all their 1911's. You need to order both springs when you replace them. Brownells's has them in stock.

David, Yes both springs are used together. The Dual Spring Recoil System is becoming more common in certain handguns.
