What does it take to make a standard M&P 22LR to have a threaded barrel? I have seen some adapters that look like they get screwed in to the end of the standard barrel but not sure they are real and will work.

I would only imagine only with threaded barrel to have anything screwed on.  Adapters to non thread barrel, I wouldn't trust that.
