Nicholas - if you want a 1911 style pistol, then yes, I would say it would work well. I think the ammo you use would be more important than the barrel length ... a good name brand hollow point should serve you well in pretty much any 'backwoods' situation you encounter. 5" is the normal barrel length for any 1911 full size Government model, and has proven to serve shooters - both military and civilian - well for over 100 years now. I think you will enjoy this gun. Rock Island makes some very nice 1911s for the price.

Yes a 5 inch barrel is just fine. as a side note you can send this gun back to RIA and have them fit a 40 cal barrel so you can switch barrels and shoot 40 cal at the range I did that with mine

Nicholas, A 5" barrel is just fine to get good performance from a 10 mm round. Talking about the woods. There are plenty of 10 mm options out there that have greater capacity and weigh much less. This is a nice gun. Carrying a 3 lb gun around the woods is not my idea of fun. Loaded weight: 2.87 lbs / 1.3 kg
