These are all just my opinions, but - having fired Shockwaves and full size guns with birdshead grips like this they are basically range toys that are very difficult/impossible to aim and don't have much real utility. A shotgun with an actual stock is easier to aim, control, and absorb recoil. Additionally there are also reduced-recoil loadings of 12 and 20 gauge buckshot that would be more pleasant to shoot. With 410 there is relatively little recoil because you are delivering relatively little energy to the target. A good article summing up everything I dislike about 410 "defensive" loads: https://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2016/03/17/shouldnt-use-410-shotshells-defense/
Mark, yes it would. You just need the right loads : https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/61553/rem+410b000hd+hd+410+uhd+410+ga+25%22+4+pellets+000+buck+shot
Mark, If this is what your wife wants so be it. The correct self defense ammunition is key. Just have her shoot from the hip would be my recommendation.
Yes it will be good with the right loads however the 12 ga using the Mini shells may be a better option the 12 ga mini shell reduce recoil way below a 20 ga and close to a .410 https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/713073270/aguila+ammo+mini-shell+12ga
