Pistol Caliber Carbines exist because someone sold the concept and it took off. They have no real purpose. They are too long to be useful as CQB weapons and being semi-auto they are not devastating like the short barreled full auto versions. They are fun to compete with and IDPA and USPSA have many matches open to them. If you are looking for a 16 inch carbine to use for self defense get a .223/5.56. It weighs the same, recoils the same and is much more effective and reliable.
