Considering my first shot gun, Mossberg 590 Nightstick, mainly for home security. But there are so many options, and I know as a handgun owner, that there are brands to stay away from... So many options to choose from, with little understanding of info listed and what to get?

Jeffrey, the Mossberg 590 NightStick will likely be near the top of your list for home security. The Shockwave or 870 are all viable options. I would seriously look into the detachable magazine models for greater firepower and ease of tactical reloads.
