With a scope (Weaver 3-9x40mm) is about $110 more than w/o the scope. Is that scope any good? Would I be better off buying the gun without a scope and spending that $110 on a better scope? Any scope recommendations in that price range?

Ryan, the Weaver is ok but, I would go for better glass Sir.  I highly recommend the Nikon Prostaff P3. I think the scope package is a good deal the weaver is a good scope and having it mounted with the correct rings makes it the way I would go. Its nice for him to be able to open the package and start shooting (sighting in)  without having to take the time to mount and boresight a scope
