L D, The AR-556 has a gas-impingement system, just like the original AR-15 rifle design and the Ruger's SR series – use a gas piston and op-rod to unlock the bolt after firing. The SR is also much lighter making for quicker handling. Review details of the differences here : https://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/gun-review-ruger-ar-556/
